However, translators sometimes encounter terms that appear to be untranslatable<\/em>: namely, words or phrases that cannot be translated directly into another language because they are too deeply rooted in a cultural or technical context. Due to its status as lingua franca in many industries, English terms often reign supreme \u2013 you\u2019re as likely to see the words \u201cworkaround\u201d and \u201cinfluencer\u201d in a German text as you are in a fully English one. For the translation professional, the question remains: should these be explained for the benefit of lay readers who have little or no understanding of English?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glance in any German-English dictionary and the top match for \u201cAnschlag\u201d would be \u201cstop\u201d. And you certainly wouldn\u2019t be wrong <\/em>to translate it as such. But if end customers read an instruction to \u201copen the drawer to the stop<\/em>\u201d, they could be forgiven for scratching their heads and wondering \u2018what kind of stop\u2019? In reality, the best rendering for this sentence would be \u201copen the drawer fully<\/em>\u201d \u2013 i.e. until it stops being pull-out-able!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such cases show that untranslatable technical terms are not a shortcoming of language, but rather evidence of its precision.<\/strong> A good translation therefore does not have to be word for word, but rather meaningful, functionally correct and technically comprehensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Example:<\/em> Depending on the target market, \u201cexcessive play\u201d, relating to the tightness of a technical component, may be translated as \u201ctoo loose\u201d, if that best suits the desired tone and the intended readership.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    AI engines are capable of astonishing feats today, especially in the field of technical translation. However, when specialist knowledge, experience and contextual understanding are required, AI often reaches its limits. If an AI tool automatically translates \u201cSchnecke\u201d as \u201csnail\u201d, it takes a human to know that it should be rendered \u201cauger\u201d in the context of construction. And when it comes to the German \u201cMutter\u201d, unfortunately it\u2019s far too common to see \u201cmother\u201d being used to secure a bolt in place rather than a \u201cnut\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
