LLM vs. NMT – in a nutshell

We utilise the strengths of LLMs and NMTs, integrating them efficiently into the translation process. DeepL and ChatGPT are two well-known tools. But what is the difference between them?

  • DeepL is based on neural machine translation (or NMT for short). NMT models are trained for translation by drawing directly from vast volumes of multilingual data.
  • ChatGPT, by contrast, is a large language model (or LLM). These models are first trained to predict the next word using monolingual texts. In technical jargon, we call this “pretraining”. A second step is then required for LLMs to specialise in translation processes. This method requires fewer examples than the NMT model, since an LLM already has a certain basic grasp of how languages work and it “only” needs to learn a new language.

Terminology management using AI

When we use AI for translation or for source-language content creation, one thing soon becomes clear: AI needs terminology! If no company-specific terminology is integrated, the value of the AI output is instantly halved. Whether you are searching, managing, extracting, grouping, harmonising or validating terminology, AI is here to help, so that you can benefit first-hand from the added value of a solidly built terminology for your company.

Terminology extraction with AI

If multilingual and validated content is already available, AI-assisted terminology extraction is a sensible solution for compiling a structured terminology in a short space of time. Using terminology-relevant texts as a starting basis, we extract term pairs and evaluate these on the basis of specific criteria. This can even be done for several languages at once.

If the relevant terms have not yet been translated and there is no defined structure, we utilise generative AI to establish a terminology database. Variants and synonyms can be grouped together quickly and easily using AI, and metadata including context, grammatical considerations or definition suggestions can also be generated.
