The changing face of the translation profession

Posted on: October 23rd, 2023 by Frank Wöhrle

A report based on 35 years of experience

Digitalisierung, Automatisierung und Künstliche Intelligenz bestimmen immer mehr Branchen nachhaltig. In this context, and with the development of machine translation (MT), the translation profession has also changed significantly.

Let’s take a look at the past and future of the translation profession in an interview with Fabienne Chapron.

Thick specialist books, dictionaries and copious reference works

“When I started my career as a translator 35 years ago, translation and the research associated with it were tedious and time-consuming. Slow PCs, massive screens, an operating system called MS-DOS and floppy disks were part of everyday life back then.

With globalisation, the volume of translation from our international customers grew rapidly over time. The variety of topics and the complexity of the content also increased significantly. The development of the translation profession continues to be extremely dynamic. Nowadays, information is changing virtually on a daily basis, both in the source and target languages.”

Optimum interaction between man and machine

“As a translator, I have been working with technology on a daily basis for a long time now – CAT tools help us with every new job. Thanks to digitalisation and, above all, using workflow automation, workflows are becoming more transparent and far easier and quicker to manage. I can get all the numerous small administrative tasks done much quicker and concentrate on my actual work – translation. Interfaces to CMS and PIM systems, or to online portals for in-country review, all speed up the translation process: Language technology helps us to reduce both the time and effort to process a job.

At the end of my career, I am now routinely working with machine translation. Through webinars and other further training courses, I have been able to add post-editing to my areas of expertise, a skill which is increasingly important in the translation profession. Machine translation achieves good results for properly formulated texts such as press releases and marketing texts. For technical texts, customer terminology is top priority; here it’s all about populating the engines with customer terminology before automation. In these cases, machine translation is part of the translation workflow in which I always have the final say in the post-editing stage.

With SEO-optimised translations, I can help my customers to gain better visibility in the global universe of search engines. This is another skill I have acquired. When I finished my degree in 1986, I never could have imagined how dynamically my way of working would change. Not only have my own standards been raised, but also those of my customers: Many companies now provide a style guide which stipulates the use of relevant stylistic elements and is updated on a regular basis.”

Translation: Anyone can do it online, can’t they?

“Translating involves much more than a translation tool. Professional translation is not just a word-for-word rendering from one language to another. Even if technology has made huge progress, it cannot replace a human translator because only they have the skills to carry out subject-specific, specialist research and to find the right tone and style. Translators who have specialist knowledge in a specific sector have crystal clear benefits compared with machines: The more specialised the vocabulary is, the harder it is for machine translation to hit the right note.”

2023 Flugfeldlauf run – STAR back on the start line and raring to go!

Posted on: September 25th, 2023 by Frank Wöhrle No Comments

This year’s event followed a slightly different and, at 5.3 km, slightly longer course to previous years. Last week, a team of STAR’s sportiest employees took part in the company fun run on the airfield. After finishing their working day, a team of 11 walkers and runners from the STAR Group and STAR Deutschland pulled on their STAR-branded running shirts and, in beautiful late-summer conditions, took a lap of the varied course around the airfield’s long lake – fully embracing the message from organisers Event Service Stahl “Get your trainers on after work and run with colleagues!”
The STAR runners crossed the line tired but in good spirits and swapped stories over a sponsored “finish line drink”.

As in previous years, the #STAR management team sponsored the company’s runners with a charitable donation.
Good for health and good for society too!

Flugfeldlauf fun run – STAR is off the blocks again!

This year a small group of STAR employees took part in the Flugfeld-Firmenlauf, a corporate fun run that takes place on the airfield in Sindelfingen. This was the 11th edition of the running event, organised by the Event Service from Stahl and held right on our doorstep. Every year in September since the very first race, we’ve enjoyed this great community event. It also gives us the opportunity to see another side to the employees of the local companies based near us. The roof terrace on the STAR building gives us an excellent view over the Böblingen/Sindelfingen airfield and we’re close enough to the track for our staff to have the opportunity to train during their lunch breaks.

This year’s course was two laps of the Langer See lake and could be completed at a walking or running pace. The sun came out just in time for the start of the race, so that the event was also blessed with good weather. All of the STAR runners crossed the finish line in good form and were pleased with their performance.

As in previous years, management encouraged participants by offering sponsorship for a social cause for anyone who wished to take part. Good for health and good for society!

With or without a handicap:
Everyone has a chance at STAR Deutschland

On Friday 15th July, after two years of cancellations due to coronavirus restrictions, we were once again able to join together for our summer social, and we had excellent conditions for it.

With the sun shining and spirits high, STAR Deutschland’s summer party this year took place outside, starting with an introduction to golf. In small groups, the friendly skilled coaches gave us a quick overview of the most important rules. Afterwards, all participants were able to practise teeing off on the driving range with guidance from the professionals to perfect their swing. Finally, the party moved to the terrace where the team could relax and chat into the evening.

The moon rising in the sky was even reminiscent of a golf ball. We could not have wished for a better venue for this relaxed get-together than the Schaichhof in Holzgerlingen. As a one-stop shop for all your translation products and services, we can guarantee you’ll hit a “hole in one” every time!

Get moving without a car

Posted on: June 27th, 2022 by star_admin No Comments

For over 40 years, the “Mobil ohne Auto” campaign (Get moving without a car) has called for sustainable alternatives to cars and enjoys great popularity thanks to its numerous events. This year, the warm weather and the success of the ‘9 Euro ticket’, a flat-fee monthly pass for regional public transport, boosted the appeal of other modes of transport.

As an employer, STAR Deutschland promotes a raft of environmentally friendly alternatives, for example, by taking part in the „Mit dem Rad zur Arbeit“ (Cycle to work) scheme, providing employee incentives through the Job-Rad bike leasing platform, providing solar-powered charging points on site for e-bikes, by covering a proportion of the costs for travelling by public transport.

Since May, there has been a renewed push to actively encourage all STAR employees to complete their daily office commute on two wheels as frequently as they can. Those who work from home were also encouraged to hop on a bike for any trips they make away from their desk. For every person who manages to use their pedal power on at least 20 days during the campaign period of May to August, the company will donate a set amount to a charitable organisation.
Getting active with a stylish Job-Rad bike improves employee health, protects the planet and does some good, all at the same time – an easy decision to make!

Keep fit and keep moving!

What does a translation project manager do?

Posted on: January 27th, 2022 by star_admin No Comments

Can you juggle? With three balls? No?
A good translation project manager can.

No matter how chaotic the circus, a project manager should be able to juggle the three balls of Quality, Time and Cost, and always remain competent, friendly and calm, keeping all the balls in the air until the project is completed.

It’s the end result that counts: An excellent translation, delivered on time.

This result can only be achieved when someone is competently leading the project from start to finish and has a tight grip on everything!

The work of a project manager is often underestimated.

But what actually comes under project management?
